Description

Best if read while listening to this.

The roar of laughter flooded the room, and inundated her ears once the Axew opened the door. "Party night, I'm assuming?" Sass asked, shuffling towards the group with a bit of pep in her step.

"Yeah, we're all sharing stories of why we decided to join the guild we did!" A spunky Purrloin, Sydney, chimed from the table, poking her chest with her thumb. "I became a Researcher to be like my sister, but also I really like alchemy and science and biology and learning and stuff!"

"Well, you know," A cute Simisage from the other side of the table directed a hand to herself, "I had to choose Explorers, not simply for the huge adventures and stuff, but because it's me in my natural habitat." Pippy leaned back in her chair, gracefully twirling her hands around, "I'm fabulous." An echo of laughter followed.

"What about you, baby?" Dim, Sass's new Sableye boyfriend, called from the other side, "Why did you decide to become a Hunter?"

Sass rolled her eyes, strutting over to the little Ghost and plopping herself in his lap. "Well, I didn't actually WANT to be a Hunter, Cuffin just decided to stick me there because Nerlfag was the only dude available apparently. I wanted to be an Explorer, though." She wrapped her arms around the little imps neck, and kissed him on the forehead. "Also, hello babe." They both smiled.

"An Explorer?" Sydney perked. "C'mon, tell us why!" She prodded.

The little dinosaur chucked, exhaling a bit. "If you insist. It's a bit of a sad tale though." A choir of scoffs and "so"s scattered across the table, which were met with another roll of the eyes from Sass. "Whatever, don't say I didn't warn y'all." She shifted her position a little bit, clearing her throat, and removing her arm from behind Dim.

She took in a breath, and then began. "See, my parents were really big on exploring, my mom especially. We would travel through the fog all the time, finding different settlements and stuff, but when I was really young we found a place to kind of, like, come back to, you know? It was this tiny little village-community sorta thing. There was a mountain that kinda shielded the fog, and then there was a huge clearing, and some woods and small streams that went into the fog. My mom liked to go out to the mountain and forests to find food for us and, sometimes, just to explore and get out of the house. Most of the time me and Dad went with her, but there were some that she went out on her own."

"Now see," She continued, taking a sip of Dim's drink, "Mom was really religious, but not like your typical 'Oh I believe in God' religious. She believed that these 'Gods' actually existed, like, she thought they were actual Pokemon. She had always talked about what it would be like to see one of them in person, but I remember Dad would always discourage her from the idea. Looking back, I kinda understand why he would, but at the time I thought he was just being a jerk ahaha. I remember her saying that there must have been a 'God' in the mountain we were parked next to, because, like..." She paused for a moment, peering towards all the anxious eyes. "Okay, well, this is kinda gruesome, but see, in that mountain? There was this super complex cave system that was super hard to get around if you weren't really good at exploring. My mom? She was one of the best explorers I know, even looking at all the dudes in this city. I haven't seen much of these guys in action, but I'm almost positive they couldn't do what my mom did. Anyway, there was this one part towards the heart of the mountain that we called... Um, shit, what did we call it?" She held her head in her hand, snapping the fingers of her other hand to herself. "Event Horizon! That's it. It was like 'the point of no return,' because, well..." She took a deep breath before continuing.

"It was like a straight line, littered with nothing but dead bodies." Gasps shot around the table. "Yeah, I know, creepy as hell, right?" She shook her head. "It was so strange, like, okay, the mountain was pretty cold, right? But right where all of these bodies were, if you stood near it, you could feel like a barrier of MUCH colder air right in front of them. I remember throwing a rock across the Event Horizon to test it, and, holy shit, I've never seen ice form that quickly. It was almost like... You know how if you run your hands under SUPER hot, boiling water, like it feels so hot that it almost feels cold? Like an icy hot? It was like that, except backwards. The air was so cold that it almost burned just to stand near it." She shivered. "It's really scary for me to think that I was that close to death, like I was literally staring it in the face. Good thing I was a relatively smart kid, ahaha..." She rubbed the back of her crest nervously.

"Well, anyway, Mom would always hoist the bodies away to respectfully dispose of them and release their spirits from the body. It was a weird ritual thing we always did, don't ask. But, she always told us that the Event Horizon wasn't a magical nature phenomenon, that it had to be from some Pokemon causing it. Dad always brushed it off, saying that it's no use, that everything that goes near it dies, blah blah. Well, I guess my mom decided to go for it? I'm not sure where she went, but it seems likely. All I know is she left in the middle of the night, and we woke up to nothing but a letter in the kitchen saying 'I'll be back soon, love Lonel.'"She coughed. "That was my mom's name, bee tee dubstep." She sweated, she wasn't sure if she was pointing out the obvious or not. "Anyway, this was kind of a normal thing? She didn't usually leave letters unless she thought she'd be gone for longer than a day, though. So we waited for a few days before we began to worry. I think it was like three or four days that passed? And she still never came home."

A couple of "aww"s were passed around the table. Sass shook her head, making a few incoherent gestures with her hands. "See, no, my mom did this kinda thing all the time though. She ALWAYS came back. Like, one time we were stranded in the fog and, like, she just walks off into oblivion and comes back a minute later with an arm full of berries. One time I tried to do that too, but I got lost and couldn't find them again. Mom found me a few minutes later. That doesn't happen in the fog. When you get lost, you're lost for good. So, of course, what my mom was able to do always baffled me. Dad couldn't even do what she did. When she traveled into the fog, I don't know how but she ALWAYS made it back. So disappearing for longer than a few days was a real shock to us. Me and Dad finally decided to go to the Event Horizon to look for her, and here's the spooky part." She paused for a moment to build suspense.

"Her body wasn't there." A few mixed reactions shot across the room. "My dad assumed someone else found her body, but... No, I don't believe it. I think she found something, and it took her away, or something. I don't know, but I know she's not dead. She can't be dead. It just doesn't make any sense. Here we have my mom, the best Explorer I know, the one who always came back when we expected her not to, and my dad's trying to tell me she's dead? Fuck that. She was smarter than that." She shook her head angrily. "After her disappearance, my dad grew really protective over me. I get it, he didn't want to lose me, but it got to the point where I was hardly even allowed outside. I went outside all the time anyway, because you know fuck the rules. That's when I met by best friend Sylvia, and we became practically sisters. Well, after about another year or so? I decided 'Fuck this noise I'm gonna find my mom,' and I kinda, ahaha.." She trailed, suddenly having a realization. "I kinda left the same way my mom did. I left a note on the kitchen counter saying something like 'I'll be back, don't come looking for me' or something. I know I told Sylvia not to follow me, I know that for a FACT."

"You didn't!" Dim scoffed. "Don't tell me you went to the cave by yourself!"

"Hey man I was a stupid kid!" She retorted. "Yeah, I went to the cave, but I didn't even make it to the Event Horizon, because I'm a weenie. I ended up running into this Froslass and the bitch was being all weird and crazy, and like I couldn't hit her because her body kept dissipating into snow! Which," She turned to the Sableye she was sitting on, "this is why I only half believed you were hurt as much as you were, because I was under the impression that Ghosts couldn't feel pain." Dim rolled his eyes, but Sass stuck her tongue out in retaliation. "Anyway, this cunt was going crazy and screaming something about being cold or whatever, I'm assuming she died in the cave? And she, like, used Blizzard or something and froze me solid. And trust me, I've been Poisoned and Burned before, but Frozen is definitely the worst. Remember how I said the cold air was almost hot, because it was so cold? Now imagine that encasing every inch of your body. It fucking HURT. And it constantly hurt for as long as I was Frozen. I don't even know how long it was, after the first few days, I think? Time just began to blur into each other. I coulda been Frozen a week, a month, even a year. I don't know. All I know is, soon after I got Frozen, Sylvia came to the cave to find me. I told her not to come. She's a Snivy, she's really fragile, especially around Ice Pokemon. And she found me, and assumed I was dead. I couldn't move, I couldn't speak, I couldn't tell her I was alright, I just had to sit there and watch her break down." She sighed, sadly. "I don't remember if my Dad ever came, being Frozen does weird things to your head." She leaned back onto Dim again, and the Sableye hugged her tightly.

"Eventually, of course, I was thawed, but like I said, I don't know how long I was out for. All I know is when I got out of the cave, the fog had passed over the mountain and engulfed our little village. Sylvia and Dad were no where to be found. I had to travel through the fog on my own, no idea where I was, WHEN I was, or where my family was. My only hope for getting answers right now is if I can get a letter to Gavin, my long time penpal, and hopefully get a response from him. I'm not sure if the postal guys here in Andalusst are as good as the guys we trusted, but I don't really have a choice." She shrugged, accompanying the gesture with a disgruntled "humph."

"But, anyway, yeah, I wanted to be an Explorer because... Well mostly because it's kind of in my blood, but also because I want to find my family, and by extension my mom. It still doesn't feel totally real to me yet, and I have a really strong feeling she's out there somewhere...  And, I mean, being a Hunter is cool and all? But I'm not all that interested in looting and treasure and all that noise. Just the thrill of exploration is enough for me, but if I gotta tag along with that Fairy faggot and solve riddles or some shit, whatever." She slumped backwards further into Dim, and he held her tighter, kissing her shoulder. "I mean at least we can like hang out with dudes from other guilds too, like you guys. And, like, honestly? Thanks for puttin up with my shit all the time. I know I can be a pain in the ass, like, all the time." She laughed to herself, ignoring all the retaliating "Oh no it's fine"s that rounded the table. She leaned back, resting her cheek on the Sableye's and sighing contently. Finally she wrapped her arms back around him, and the concerned chimes across the room quickly evolved into flirtatious jeers like "Get a room" and "Aww ye Dimmy's gettin it in," but a certain image refused to leave her mind.

The room faded slowly to a dark, cold atmosphere. Trinkles of snow touched the Axew's face... It wasn't real, she knew she was daydreaming, but the way her mother lumbered through the flurry just seemed so real...

Short Story "Ruins," describing Sass's mom and quite a bit of her past. IDK I just really like her mom as a character and wanted to introduce her as soon as I could. Haxorus's are a pain to draw but wow are they pretty <333

Event Horizon. The point in space-time where events occur independently of those beyond it. In practical relativity, it's used to describe the edge of a black hole, the place from which the gravity is so extreme as to make escape impossible.

...What awaited Lonel in those mountains?
